Men and mental health: A personal perspective

The fact that suicide is the biggest killer of men under the age of 50 is a shocking, but
increasingly more well-known fact of life – and death – in this country. But is this properly
understood? Do we really know why significant numbers of men each year decide to take
their own lives? Where are the voices of those men that experience mental illness to the
extent that ending their lives becomes both realistic and appealing?
In this presentation, Julian Harrison explores these and other relevant issues from the lived
experience of having been mentally ill since childhood. He examines the common use of the
phrase ‘man up’ and suggests it either needs abandoning altogether, or subtly, but
significantly, reinvented.
